HDS Laser Surveying Helps Deliver Outstanding Quality at Silverstone Racetrack

HDS provide innovative vehicle-mounted laser surveying services such as volumetric patch equivalent texture and rolling straight edge equivalent profile, as well as conventional laser surveys such as sensor measured texture depth (SMTD), mean profile depth (MPD), international roughness index (IRI) and griptesting.

The Silverstone contracting team needed high-accuracy information about the racetrack’s ride profile, texture, and skid resistance (grip) to establish a baseline from which to improve. HDS conducted surveying across multiple directions, including the racing line, which proved instrumental in the successful delivery of the international standard racetrack.

State-of-the-art levelling systems on planers and pavers took the existing track smoothness as a reference point to ensure that the ideal amount was taken off the surface and exactly the correct amount put back down. HDS surveying proved the final quality of the racetrack was over 50% better when measured in IRI terms, and met obligations for texture and grip to ensure a fast, effective and safe race environment.
